Indonesia's Foreign Ministry Reveals Contents of Prabowo's Letter to the Iranian President
JAKARTA — Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry has disclosed the contents of President Prabowo Subianto’s letter to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, sent to express condolences on the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
‘Condolences,’ the first paragraph reads. And solidarity, of course, with the people and government of Iran, as stated by Yvonne Mewengkang, spokesperson for the First Desk of the Foreign Ministry, when met at her office on Friday (6 March 2026).
The letter was sent by Foreign Minister Sugiono to the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, following the US and Israel’s attack on Iran that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday (28 February 2026).
‘Earlier, someone asked why deliver the letter? Actually, delivering a letter in diplomatic communication is one of the most personal, intense forms of interaction between heads of state,’ Yvonne explained.
The letter was handed over by Foreign Minister Sugiono during a meeting with the Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Boroujerdi on Wednesday (4 March 2026).
That meeting was posted by Sugiono on his X account, @Menlu_RI, on the same day.
‘I also conveyed the letter from President @prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian which expresses deepest condolences on the passing of His Excellency Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran,’ Sugiono said in his post.
