The electric vehicle battery plant owned by PT Contemporary Amperex Technology Indonesia Battery (CATIB) in Karawang, West Java, is scheduled to begin operations at the end of July 2026. PT CATIB is a joint venture between Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) and CBL, a subsidiary of China’s largest battery manufacturer, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL). IBC President Director Aditya Farhan Arif stated that the plant’s initial production capacity will be 6.9 gigawatt hours (GWh), with plans to expand to 15 GWh, equivalent to the battery requirements for 250,000 electric vehicles. Construction is currently 90% complete and remains on schedule. Aditya explained that the plant will not face difficulties finding buyers once commercial operations commence, as the industry concept is built on existing demand, allowing production to begin immediately. Trial production is already underway at the facility. He further noted that the nickel value chain, from mining to battery production, is a lengthy process, and PT CATIB occupies the most downstream position, making it a vital part of the integrated nickel industry ecosystem.
