Indonesia's Digital Economy Projected to Reach USD130 Billion by 2026
The Indonesian government views the nation’s digital economy as experiencing significant growth and functioning as a key driver of national economic transformation.
Indonesia’s digital economy value is projected to exceed USD130 billion by 2026, supported by internet penetration reaching approximately 79.5 per cent of the total population.
Ali Murtopo Simbolon, Deputy Coordinator for Trade and Digital Economy at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, stated that this development positions Indonesia as ASEAN’s largest digital economy.
“As a country with the largest digital economy in ASEAN, Indonesia demonstrates significant growth in recent years. Indonesia’s digital economy value is projected to exceed USD130 billion by 2026,” Ali said at the Soft Launching of the ASOCIO Digital AI Summit 2026 and ASOCIO Digital Award event.
He added that digital transaction activity continues to increase. In January 2026, digital payment transactions exceeded 4.7 billion transactions, or grew nearly 40 per cent annually.
This growth has made Indonesia one of the primary targets for digital investment in Southeast Asia, with increasing investment flows into the technology and digital infrastructure sectors.
To ensure optimal digital transformation, the government continues to strengthen digital human resource (HR) development as the foundation for building a technology-based future economy.
According to Ali, the development of cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) is key to increasing productivity, industrial efficiency, and national economic competitiveness at the global level.
AI technology is viewed as having the potential to become a new engine of growth that can accelerate transformation across various economic sectors, whilst opening opportunities for new business models and increasing industrial value-added.
As part of efforts to strengthen the digital and AI ecosystem, the government together with the Asian Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO) will host the ASOCIO Digital AI Summit 2026 on 29–31 July 2026 in Jakarta.
The forum will bring together various stakeholders ranging from government, technology industry players, academics, to innovators to strengthen regional collaboration in artificial intelligence and digital economy development across the Asia-Pacific region.
Under the theme “Hybrid Intelligence Unbound: Reimagining Innovation, Infrastructure and Regional Sovereignty”, the forum will discuss several strategic agendas, including digital transformation and AI adoption, strengthening technology governance and ethics, building inclusive digital infrastructure, and increasing the role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the digital ecosystem.
Additionally, the forum is expected to expand investment opportunities in technology, strengthen cross-border business connectivity, and encourage AI utilisation to increase industrial efficiency and public service quality.
“As the host of ASOCIO Digital AI Summit 2026, Indonesia wants to make this forum a foundation for future AI development,” said Ali Murtopo Simbolon.
He added that the government hopes AI utilisation can accelerate economic growth through three main pillars: the digital economy, the semiconductor industry, and the use of advanced technology to enhance national industrial competitiveness.
The launching event was also attended by the Chairman of the National Association of ICT Entrepreneurs Soegiharto Santoso, Chairman of the Asian Oceanian Computing Industry Organization Stan Singh-Jit, Chairman of the Organising Committee Karim Taslim, representatives from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, and information and communication technology industry players.
