Indonesia’s operating data centre capacity is currently about 540 megawatts (MW), while demand for infrastructure is expected to continue rising over the next few years.

Lamongan, East Java (ANTARA) — Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) chairman Muhammad Arif said the country’s data centre capacity is projected to exceed 1,000 MW by 2030, as demand for infrastructure to support the growth of the digital economy increases.

“Data centre capacity currently in operation nationwide is about 540 MW, while infrastructure needs are expected to continue increasing over the next few years,” he said after the launch of a data centre operated by PT Tigabelas Solusi Nusantara (TSN) in Lamongan, East Java, on Thursday.

He said demand for data centres remained high because many providers were expected to reach full capacity in the coming years, making it necessary to prepare new facilities.

Arif said the data centre industry’s development needed to be matched by infrastructure built across different regions, so that data storage and processing would not be concentrated solely in metropolitan areas.

Regional data centres could also support the growth of internet service providers, increase demand for information technology workers and stimulate supporting sectors, including cable network construction and telecommunications infrastructure.

Arif added that the Lamongan data centre formed part of the development of digital infrastructure in East Java, which also includes medium-scale facilities and edge data centres in several areas.

TSN was established through a collaboration among 13 technology companies that are APJII members in East Java, based in Lamongan, Tuban, Bojonegoro, Mojokerto and Jombang.

The company operates the data centre and has also launched the initial node of the IIX-JI internet exchange to strengthen local network connectivity.
