Indonesia's Daily Waste Volume Reaches 141,000 Tonnes, Environment Minister: 75% Untreated
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry records that Indonesia’s daily waste volume can reach 141,000 tonnes. Of this amount, approximately 8,000 tonnes originate from Jakarta. Environment Minister Moh Jumhur Hidayat stated that the government is currently focusing on addressing waste problems, as only about 25% of the daily waste volume is properly processed. Therefore, efforts are needed to tackle the national waste issue. “Across Indonesia, there are 141,000 tonnes of waste every day. In Jakarta, it’s about 8,000 tonnes of waste daily. The fact is, nationwide, 75% is still not properly processed,” he said in the Rasuna Said area, South Jakarta, on Sunday (10/5/2026). For this reason, he supports the Waste Sorting Movement initiated by the Jakarta Provincial Government to reduce waste entering the Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST) Bantargebang. According to him, Jakarta should indeed serve as an example in sustainable waste management. Jumhur also hopes that the movement can be implemented in other regions. After all, waste management must start from the source. “But this is important for local governments across Indonesia: when the community wants to sort waste, sometimes there are no facilities at waste collection points,” he said. Therefore, he asked local governments to facilitate communities that have already sorted their waste. Without proper policies, community initiatives will not have an impact. “The waste sorting movement combined with policies to provide facilities will ultimately result in perfect waste sorting,” he said.
