Indonesia's BPJS Kesehatan to undergo major reform under new board

“This is a new spirit. We must ensure that past issues do not recur,” Iskandar said here on Monday.

He noted that the dynamics that had raised concerns in recent months have been resolved internally, and it is now time to make the new leadership a starting point for structural improvements.

Iskandar emphasized that the key to restoring BPJS Kesehatan’s financial health lies in sound budget politics.

He expressed support for improving budget policies, beginning with accurate identification of subsidy recipients, reliable data management, and the selection of effective and sustainable programs.

“Let’s transform BPJS Kesehatan to become more advanced in the coming years. There should be no more recurring deficits. Our main challenge begins with fixing our budget politics. Appropriate budget policies must start with accurate subsidies and data, followed by the right programs and strong engagement,” he remarked.

He also underscored that BPJS Kesehatan represents a large-scale mutual cooperation scheme rooted in the Constitution, in line with Articles 33 and 34 of the 1945 Constitution, which govern the national economic system and social security for all citizens.

The spirit of mutual cooperation, he added, must be strengthened through broad participation and a stronger sense of public ownership.

In terms of transformation, Iskandar highlighted data updating as the most urgent agenda, stressing that transparency and interagency data integration are essential to improving public communication and ensuring evidence-based policies.
