Indonesia's Biodiversity: A Sustainable Source of Medicinal Plants
Indonesia’s geographical location in the tropics, relatively stable climate, and thousands of islands have created diverse ecosystems that serve as habitats for a wide variety of flora and fauna. This biological wealth positions Indonesia as a megadiverse country with a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and providing valuable natural resources for human life. One of the greatest potentials of this richness is the existence of medicinal plants, which have long been utilised by communities in traditional medicine systems and as raw materials for the modern health industry.
The use of medicinal plants in Indonesia has a long history closely tied to local wisdom. Various ethnic groups possess traditional knowledge about using plants to treat illnesses, maintain fitness, and boost the immune system. Plants such as ginger (Zingiber officinale), turmeric (Curcuma longa), Javanese ginger (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), aromatic ginger (Kaempferia galanga), green chiretta (Andrographis paniculata), betel leaf (Piper betle), and gotu kola (Centella asiatica) are examples of flora used for generations in Indonesian traditional medicine. This knowledge not only reflects a harmonious relationship between humans and nature but also serves as a crucial foundation for developing science based on local resources.
The potential of Indonesian medicinal plants is enormous in terms of the number of species available. It is estimated that Indonesia has around 9,600 plant species with medicinal potential. However, only a small fraction have been scientifically studied for their phytochemical content, pharmacological effectiveness, and safety aspects. This indicates that opportunities for exploration and innovation remain wide open. Various studies have proven that Indonesian plants contain secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, and steroids, which possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and even anticancer activities. These compounds form the basis for developing herbal medicines and modern pharmaceuticals derived from natural ingredients.
The development of medicinal plants not only benefits the health sector but also contributes to national economic growth. The industry for jamu, standardised herbal medicines, and phytopharmaceuticals is showing positive development, driven by increasing public awareness of natural products. The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has recorded that thousands of traditional medicine products have obtained marketing authorisation after meeting safety, quality, and efficacy requirements. This situation presents an opportunity for Indonesia to enhance the competitiveness of its herbal industry internationally while strengthening self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical raw materials, which have largely depended on imports.
Optimising biodiversity as a source of medicinal plants requires continuous research support. Fields such as phytochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, and pharmacology play a vital role in identifying active compounds and scientifically proving the efficacy of medicinal plants. Through such research, the use of medicinal plants is not solely based on empirical community experience but also gains scientific validation acceptable in the medical world. Collaboration between universities, research institutions, the pharmaceutical industry, and the government is a key factor in accelerating health product innovation based on Indonesia’s biological wealth.
Despite its enormous potential, Indonesia’s biodiversity faces various challenges that could hinder its sustainable use. Deforestation, land conversion, forest fires, overexploitation of natural resources, and climate change are causing population declines in many plant species. Some endemic species are even threatened with extinction before their benefits to human health can be studied. These threats underscore the need for conservation efforts that are oriented towards sustainability.
Medicinal plant conservation can be carried out through in situ and ex situ approaches. In situ conservation involves protecting species in their natural habitats through national parks, nature reserves, protected forests, and other conservation areas. Meanwhile, ex situ conservation is conducted through botanical gardens, medicinal plant collection gardens, seed banks, and germplasm banks. These two approaches complement each other in maintaining the continuity of genetic resources while supporting research and development activities. Additionally, preserving traditional community knowledge regarding the use of medicinal plants must also be protected as part of the nation’s cultural heritage.
Optimising Indonesia’s medicinal plants must also adhere to the principles of sustainable development. The use of natural resources should not be solely oriented towards short-term economic gain but must also consider environmental, social, and community welfare aspects. Sustainable cultivation of medicinal plants, empowerment of local farmers, implementation of environmentally friendly agricultural practices, and community-based industrial development are strategic steps to create economic added value without compromising environmental sustainability. This approach aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the aspects of health, responsible consumption and production.
