Indonesia's Best-Selling Cars: Innova Leads as Avanza Falls Behind Pickups

The map of Indonesia’s best-selling cars shifted again in May 2026. For years, the Toyota Avanza was known as the ‘people’s car’, but its position at the top has been increasingly squeezed. The Avanza has now fallen behind several other models, including commercial pickup trucks.

Data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) shows the Toyota Kijang Innova remains the highest-selling model in the country. Combined sales of the Innova Zenix and Innova Reborn reached 6,658 units throughout May, making it the ruler of the national car market.

The gap between the Innova and its competitors is considerable. In second place, the Suzuki Carry pickup recorded distribution of 3,793 units, followed by the Daihatsu Gran Max pickup with 3,565 units.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Avanza, which for years was the backbone of national automotive sales, could only manage fourth place with sales of 3,486 units. This means the Avanza not only trails its Toyota sibling, the Kijang Innova, but has also been beaten by two pickup models widely used by businesses.

This shift comes as the national automotive market experiences a slowdown. Wholesales, or distribution from factories to dealers, in May were recorded at 69,219 units, down from 80,779 units in April.

Despite the monthly dip, the market still shows cumulative growth. From January to May 2026, wholesales reached 359,015 units, a 12.8% increase compared to the same period last year. Retail sales also grew 8.8% to 359,490 units.

Beyond the Innova’s dominance, another surprise came from the Chinese brand Jaecoo. Its electric model, the Jaecoo J5, broke into the top five with sales of 2,943 units. In contrast, BYD, which had previously been aggressive in the electric vehicle market, did not appear in the list of the 20 best-selling cars last month.

Outside the top five, other models recording strong sales include the Toyota Calya with 2,785 units, Toyota Rush with 2,704 units, Daihatsu Gran Max blind van and minibus with 2,636 units, Toyota Veloz Hybrid with 2,378 units, and Daihatsu Sigra with 2,135 units, occupying positions six through ten respectively.
