Indonesia's B50 Biodiesel Mandate Set for July 2026, DPR Hails as Energy Milestone

The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, will officially implement the B50 biodiesel mandate starting 1 July 2026. Bambang Patijaya, Chairman of Commission XII of the House of Representatives, commended the move, describing it as a significant milestone in strengthening the national bioenergy ecosystem, accelerating the downstreaming of natural resources, and reinforcing Indonesia’s energy security. He noted that the policy demonstrates the government’s consistency under Minister Bahlil Lahadalia in executing the energy self-sufficiency agenda championed by President Prabowo Subianto. Amid geopolitical dynamics and global energy price fluctuations, utilising domestically sourced energy is considered a precise strategy to bolster national energy independence. According to Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources data, the B50 implementation is projected to increase national biodiesel demand to approximately 17.6 million kilolitres by 2026 and potentially save up to Rp157 trillion in foreign exchange through reduced diesel imports. Beyond fiscal benefits, the policy also strengthens the use of palm oil as a high-value energy feedstock. Bambang stated that the B50 programme is not merely about increasing the blending percentage but serves as a foundation for an integrated national bioenergy ecosystem from upstream to downstream. He added that this policy certainty sends a positive signal to the business community to continue investing in the bioenergy industry, including biodiesel processing, distribution infrastructure, technology development, and supporting industrial capacity. He also appreciated the government’s readiness in conducting prior technical trials for B50 across various transportation modes, heavy equipment, railways, and industrial sectors before nationwide implementation. As Chair of Commission XII, Bambang affirmed that the House will continue its oversight function to ensure the implementation meets targets, covering raw material supply readiness, biodiesel quality, distribution effectiveness, and policy sustainability. He expressed hope that the B50 mandate will serve as a stepping stone to accelerate the development of other national bioenergy sources, such as bioethanol and other biofuels, positioning Indonesia as a leading country in renewable energy development based on biofuel.
