Indonesia's Automotive Industry Accelerates, Car Exports Surge
The national automotive industry showed a fairly good trend in the first half of 2026. Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) Putu Juli Ardika assessed that the domestic market is one indicator showing that demand for vehicles remains sustained amid global economic challenges.
“Based on the latest data recorded at Gaikindo, our domestic automotive market recorded very good performance from January to June 2026. Domestic car sales reached 436,564 units, compared to 376,707 units in the same period last year. So this figure grew by around 15.8%,” Putu Juli said during a press conference for GIIAS 2026 in Jakarta on Monday (13/7/2026).
In addition to the domestic market, vehicle shipments abroad also continued to record growth. This performance shows that Indonesian-made automotive products remain competitive in the export market.
“Equally good news also comes from our automotive export performance up to June 2026. Total car shipments have reached 251,705 units. Compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 233,648 units, this figure shows positive growth of 7.7%,” Putu said.
Furthermore, growth was also seen in the supporting industries that supply the needs of vehicle manufacturers. The performance of the components sector is one of the important pillars for the national automotive supply chain.
“Much higher growth was achieved by the automotive components sector, which surged 112.9%. This is an extraordinary achievement year-on-year, with total shipments of 25,718,510 pieces to various destination countries,” Putu stated.
On the other hand, vehicle manufacturing activity in the country still shows an expansionary trend. This production growth strengthens optimism about the prospects for the automotive industry throughout this year.
“All these positive records are also supported by the domestic production sector, where the manufacture of four-wheeled vehicles managed to grow 14% annually in the first quarter of 2026. So, these are very impressive records in economic conditions that are not easy. Our automotive industry has been quite successful in performing well,” Putu said.
