Indonesia's Air Power Grows as Six T-50i Fighter Jets Arrive from South Korea

South Korean aerospace firm Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) Ltd. has announced the successful completion of the delivery of six additional T-50i advanced trainer jets to the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU). The handover marks the conclusion of the latest delivery phase under the strategic defence cooperation agreement between the two nations. KAI had previously signed a formal contract to supply the additional T-50i jets to the TNI AU in 2021. The T-50i is a supersonic trainer jet jointly developed by South Korea and the American company Lockheed Martin. The delivery process commenced in stages in February and was completed by the middle of this month. The South Korean manufacturer first secured an order for 16 T-50i trainer jets from Indonesia in 2011. With the completion of this latest shipment, the total number of T-50i aircraft delivered to strengthen the Indonesian military now stands at 22 units. Indonesia holds the distinction of being the first foreign customer to purchase and operate the export variant of South Korea’s first domestically developed supersonic trainer jet. Cumulatively, Indonesia has acquired 42 aircraft from South Korea, a figure that includes 20 KT-1 basic trainer planes already in service. Bilateral relations between the two nations are expected to continue expanding, particularly in the strategic defence industry, as evidenced by Indonesia’s active participation in the joint development of South Korea’s next-generation KF-21 fighter jet.
