Indonesian citizens can travel to Canada without a visa starting Tuesday, 26 May 2026. Instead, they must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the country.

“The change in visa requirements for eligible travellers from Indonesia and Malaysia is part of the Canadian government’s broader effort to deepen engagement across the Indo-Pacific,” said Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Lena Metlege Diab, according to her official website on Wednesday, 27 May 2026.

Diab added that the policy aims to support trade and investment, and facilitate connections, business, and contributions to Canada’s long-term economic growth.

Indonesian citizens who have never held a Canadian visa and do not hold an active US visa must still apply for a visitor visa to Canada.

Specifically, Indonesian citizens who have previously held a Canadian visa or an active US visa can apply for a Canadian ETA by paying a fee of seven Canadian dollars, approximately Rp 90,000.

After preparing all documents, Indonesian citizens can submit their ETA application via Canada’s official immigration website.

Most ETA applications are approved within minutes, with confirmation sent directly to the applicant’s email.

If Indonesian citizens obtain a new passport, they must apply for a new ETA.

It is important to note that holding an ETA does not guarantee entry into Canada, but rather serves as an air travel authorisation for travellers.

Upon arrival in Canada, immigration officials will still check passports and determine the traveller’s eligibility.

Therefore, the ETA is only valid for air travel. Those entering Canada by land or sea must still possess a visitor visa.
