Indonesian worker killed in fight

MALAYSIA: A party for the Muslim Eid al-Fitr holiday in Malaysia turned ugly when a fight broke out, leaving an Indonesian worker dead, a report said on Friday.

More than 1,000 Indonesian immigrants had gathered on Thursday at a beach in the eastern Sarawak state for a party when the fight was sparked, police told the New Straits Times daily.

The 30-year-old victim died of multiple stab wounds. Two other party-goers were injured.

Police said that the gathering, organized by several plantation companies for the workers, was attended by people from several Indonesian districts.

It was not immediately clear what had started the fight, but police recovered sickles, machetes, knives and sticks at the crime scene.

More than 60,000 Indonesian migrants work at oil palm plantations and construction sites in the state, the report said. -- DPA
