Indonesian vanguard advances in Copenhagen

By Primastuti Handayani

COPENHAGEN (JP): The Indonesian flag continues to fly in Copenhagen as women's singles player Cindana Hartono, men's singles Hendrawan and three men's doubles teams survived the third day of the badminton World Championships at Brondby Hall.

Tenth seeded Cindana upset China's Gong Zhichao 11-9, 4-11, 11-6 in a thrilling match.

"My feet are killing me. They really hurt, but I was so close to victory I tried not to think about it," she said after the match.

Cindana will next meet another Chinese player, second seeded Gong Ruina, on Friday evening. Gong defeated Mette Pedersen of Denmark 11-3, 11-5 on Thursday.

In another women's singles match, Lidya Djaelawidjaja failed to score an upset, losing to the hero of the Sudirman Cup, China's Dai Yun. The final score of the match was 8-11, 11-6, 3- 11.

"I'm so disappointed. She changed her play in the third game. She speeded up the rhythm and I didn't make adjustments. I made too many unforced errors," a tearful Lidya said.

In the men's singles, the only Indonesian to survive into the quarterfinals was Hendrawan. He defeated Ardy Wiranata 15-13, 15- 10 and next will meet 1996 Olympic champion Poul-Erik Hoyer- Larsen of Denmark. Hoyer-Larsen beat Rashid Sidek of Malaysia 15- 6, 15-8 to reach the quarterfinals.

"I played better today. I tried to speed up in the second game because it's really difficult to beat Ardy," Hendrawan said.

"I haven't met Poul-Erik since the 1997 Danish Open. I will try my best tomorrow. He has the advantage of playing before his home crowd but I still have a chance," Hendrawan, who has failed to defeat the 33-year-old Dane in five meetings, said.

Indonesian debutant Taufik Hidayat, 17, failed to overcome China's Sun Jun on Thursday, losing 15-7, 6-15, 6-15 in a 59- minute match.

Taufik lost 4-15, 1-15 to Gade Christensen in the Sudirman Cup semifinals.

Third seeded Budi Santoso also tumbled out of the championships in the third round, suffering an 11-15, 15-10, 15-9 defeat at the hands of Dane Kenneth Jonassen.

Sweat

In the men's doubles, third seeded Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan barely broke a sweat in their overwhelming 15-7, 15-4 defeat of Peter Axelsson and Par-Gunnar Jonsson of Sweden.

Candra and Tony will meet the 12 seeded South Korean pairing of Kim Dong-moon and Ha Tae-kwon in the quarterfinals. The Koreans defeated Pramote Teerawiwatana and Tesa Panvisvas of Thailand 15-7, 15-9 to reach the quarterfinals.

Second seeded Flandy Limpele and Eng Hian also reached the quarters by eliminating Cheng Rui and Wang Wei of China 15-9, 15- 11.

The Indonesians will now face the Chinese duo of Zhang Wei and Zhang Jun, seeded 11. The Chinese beat home favorites Michael Sogaard and Jim Laugesen 15-5, 10-15, 15-4 to make it to the quarterfinals.

The long-standing partnership of Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky also managed to reach the quarters by topping Victo Wibowo and Lee Wei-Jen of Chinese Taipei 15-4, 15-11. The Indonesians now will face the Korean pair of Lee Dong-soo and Yoo Yong-sung, who defeated Cheah Soon Kit and Choong Tan Fook of Malaysia 15-13, 15-13.

Another quarterfinal match will pit Yu Jinhao and Chen Qiqiu of China against Simon Archer and Nathan Robertson of England. The Chinese beat Malaysians Jeremy Gan and Chan Chong Min 15-8, 15-6 while the Britons defeated Denmark's Jens Eriksen and Jesper Larsen 15-5, 8-15, 15-12.

Two Indonesian women's doubles teams went down to defeat in Thursday's action.

Etty Tantri and Cynthia Tuwankotta were no match for top seeded Huang Nanyan and Yang Wei of China, losing 10-15, 6-15.

Indarti Issoliana and Carmelita also lost, going down to Nicole van Hooren and Lotte Jonathans of the Netherlands 15-11, 6-15, 5-15.

The mixed doubles team of Bambang Suprianto and Zelin Resiana also lost, falling to All England champions Simon Archer and Joanne Goode 7-15, 9-15. (yan)
