Jakarta (ANTARA) - An Indonesian personnel serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed amid the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.

The information was conveyed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres via the X platform on Monday (30/3).

“I strongly condemn the incident on Sunday in which an Indonesian peacekeeper with UNIFIL was killed amid hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah,” he said.

Guterres also mentioned that another Indonesian UNIFIL personnel was severely injured in the incident.

He extended condolences to the Indonesian nation, particularly the family and colleagues of the victim, and expressed hopes for a swift recovery for the injured personnel.

According to Guterres, the incident is part of a series of events endangering the safety of peacekeeping forces.

“I call on all parties to fulfil their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety of UN personnel and property at all times,” he said.

Tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran on 28 February 2026.

Iran then launched retaliatory strikes on Israel and several regions hosting US military assets in the area.

The conflict spread to Lebanon after Hezbollah joined in launching attacks on several military targets in Israel.

Israeli counterattacks have reportedly killed more than 1,000 Lebanese civilians and injured thousands others.

Incidents along the Israel-Lebanon border have also claimed victims from UNIFIL personnel of various nationalities.

Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry previously affirmed that the safety of Garuda Contingent personnel remains a priority.

“The Indonesian government continues to closely monitor developments in the situation and their impact on the Garuda Contingent,” the ministry stated on 14 March.
