Indonesian Traffic Police to Implement Face Recognition to Combat Number Plate Violations

The Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) is strengthening its digital transformation in traffic law enforcement. A key focus is the implementation of Face Recognition (FR) technology, integrated with the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system and the Directorate General of Dukcapil’s population data, to identify violators using fake number plates or not displaying a Tanda Nomor Kendaraan Bermotor (TNKB).

This policy, directed by Kakorlantas Polri Inspector General Wibowo, comes in response to persistently high levels of number plate violations. During the first semester of 2026, the ETLE system recorded 16,812 violations related to number plates. These infractions included vehicles operating without a TNKB or using counterfeit plates, with 77.24 percent of the offences committed by motorcyclists.

Brigadier General I Made Agus Prasatya, Director of Law Enforcement at Korlantas Polri, stated that the TNKB is the official vehicle identity issued by the police and is a crucial component of the registration, vehicle identification, and law enforcement systems. He noted that these violations are typically committed to avoid ETLE penalties, circumvent odd-even traffic policies, or to cover tracks in criminal cases and hit-and-run incidents.

To address these challenges, Korlantas Polri is deploying Face Recognition technology capable of identifying riders through ETLE cameras and matching them with Dukcapil population data. This technology allows authorities to ascertain a rider’s identity even if the vehicle uses a fake plate, has its plate covered, or is not displaying a plate at all. The implementation of Face Recognition not only enhances the accuracy of traffic law enforcement but also supports the uncovering of criminal acts on the road, ensures that violation confirmation letters are sent to the correct individuals, and prevents the misuse of vehicle identities.
