Indonesian TNI Soldier Falls, Foreign Ministry Strongly Condemns Attack on UNIFIL
The Indonesian government has confirmed that one soldier from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), serving with the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, was killed after being struck in an attack by Zionist Israeli occupation forces at the UNIFIL position in Adchit al-Qusayr. Three other soldiers remain injured and in critical condition. The attack on the UNIFIL security post occurred while Zionist forces were exchanging fire with armed groups in the northern border area of the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. “The Government of the Republic of Indonesia extends its deepest condolences over the death of one Indonesian peacekeeper and the injury of three others while on duty with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL),” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang to Republika on Monday (30/3/2026). The attack was reported to have taken place on Sunday (29/3/2026) night or Monday (30/3/2026) early morning Indonesian time. “The incident occurred after indirect artillery fire hit the Indonesian contingent’s position near Adchit al-Qusayr on 29 March 2026. The incident took place amid reports of exchanges of fire between Israeli military and armed groups in southern Lebanon,” Yvonne stated. On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, Yvonne strongly condemned the attack targeting international peacekeeping forces. “Indonesia strongly condemns the incident and calls for a thorough and transparent investigation,” she added. The indirect artillery fire that struck the Indonesian peacekeepers remains unacceptable. Yvonne stated that UNIFIL peacekeeping forces, under the official mandate of the United Nations, require warring parties not to target them as objects of attack. Attacks on UN peacekeeping forces violate international humanitarian law and war law, as well as UN Security Council Resolution 1701 on war crimes. “The safety and security of UN peacekeeping personnel must always be fully respected in accordance with international law. Any actions that endanger peacekeepers are unacceptable and disrupt joint efforts to maintain peace and stability,” Yvonne said. The Indonesian government also strongly condemns the attacks carried out by Zionist Israeli occupation forces in southern Lebanon. This is because such brutal attacks target all parties in the area, including civilians, and public infrastructure.
