The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, through the Directorate General of Marine and Fisheries Product Competitiveness Enhancement (PDSPKP), has affirmed that tilapia is now a primary new export commodity for Indonesia, particularly for the United States and European markets. Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated that tilapia production is being continuously driven to meet high global demand, notably through the development of the Karawang saline tilapia (BINS) cultivation area and the revitalisation of ponds along the North Coast (Pantura). “These two programmes aim to increase national tilapia production capacity while ensuring that the entire cultivation process meets applicable international standards,” he said in a written statement in Jakarta.

The Director of Marketing at the PDSPKP, Erwin Dwiyana, revealed that tilapia is currently a major attraction for global consumers. Often referred to as the ‘Chicken of the Sea’ due to its mild flavour and ease of preparation, tilapia offers high protein content of 20 to 29 grams per 100g serving, is low in saturated fat, and contains Omega-3, 6, 9, vitamin B12, and other beneficial minerals. “Currently, tilapia is our zero-rejection export commodity. We recognise that global standards are crucial, ranging from mandatory requirements such as GMP-SSOP, HACCP, Health Certificates, and Registration Numbers, to buyer-driven certifications like GLOBALG.A.P., ISO 22000, SQF, BAP, ASC, and BRC. All our exporters are equipped with these, ensuring market confidence in our products,” said Erwin.

According to Erwin, this comprehensive certification is the key to international market trust, allowing Indonesian tilapia to be accepted without rejection in destination countries. Due to these strict standards, Regal Springs Indonesia, a major local producer, has achieved significant international success, notably supplying the prominent UK pub chain Greene King. Tri Dharma Saputra, Director of Regal Springs Indonesia, noted that penetrating the European market was made possible by meeting 37 certifications, including the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) standard. “The ASC certification requires Indonesian aquaculture to transform; everything is measured, recorded, and evaluated, from water management and feeding to fish health and welfare. This transformation ensures Indonesian tilapia is not only high quality but also environmentally friendly and sustainable,” he explained. In the UK, tilapia is successfully utilised in dishes ranging from fish and chips to boneless fine-dining offerings, maintaining very low consumer complaint rates. Furthermore, its competitive pricing compared to other whitefish allows it to capture market share previously dominated by established species such as cod and trout.
