Indonesian students in Beijing under the PERMIT Beijing umbrella recently visited the Yauma Palmerah Orphanage to offer care and attention to the children there. Awareness of the importance of caring for orphans and other vulnerable children underpins the rationale for the ‘PERMIT Charity 2026’ initiative. With the theme ‘Sharing Warmth and Love’, the event provides a platform for students from Beijing-based universities including BIT, Peking University, Tsinghua University, BFSU, BNU, Beihang, BLCU, and UIBE to contribute. PERMIT Beijing serves as the umbrella for Indonesian students from these universities in supporting the activity.

The event was warmly welcomed by the management and the children at the orphanage. The warmth and love conveyed by the Indonesian students created happiness within the orphanage. For the Beijing-based students, the joy arising from their presence fostered a sense of delight and community.

PERMIT Beijing’s involvement goes beyond warmth; they also aim to help sustain the orphanage in the long term, with social assistance accumulated from donations from many students, the Indonesian diaspora, and other community members being handed to the orphanage.

‘The activities we organise are not merely a platform for Indonesian students in Beijing, but also a driver of empathy, sympathy, and social awareness—a contribution to character-building for students,’ said Jonathan, the Chair of PERMIT Charity 2026, in a statement released today.

He stressed that the initiative demonstrates the social responsibility of Indonesian students not only in China but also back home in Indonesia. He noted that Indonesia is a nation with a strong communal culture, and PERMIT Beijing seeks to keep that spirit alive in a sustainable way as a sign of consistent care.

According to Jonathan, amid discussions of nationalism within the Indonesian diaspora abroad, PERMIT Beijing stands as tangible evidence that diaspora nationalism among Indonesian students abroad remains alive and vibrant.

The contributions of Indonesian students in Beijing to orphans are not merely acts of empathy but also expressions of care for the nation—a living sense of patriotism.

‘The flame that never dies,’ as the Indonesian proverb goes, a spirit that will live forever wherever we are and whenever,’ he concluded. (H-2)
