Indonesian student wins award

JAKARTA: An Indonesian student won a prestigious award from
the Canadian Institute of Telecommunications Research after being
chosen as one of the four best researchers at the Network of
Centers of Excellence 2001 program.

Eky Syachrudin, Indonesian Ambassador to Canada, said in New
York on Tuesday that the success of Gamantyo Hendrantoro, who
hailed from Jombang, East Java, showed that the Indonesian
student had strong ability when judged by international
standards.

"This shows that Indonesian students can compete with their
counterparts from other countries," Eky said.

Gamantyo did his research as part of his quest for a PhD
degree from Carleton University in Canada.

The other three students receiving awards were Noel Tin from
Queens University, Thimma Babu from Concordia University and Marc
Chateauneuf of McGill University. -- Antara
