Indonesian Student to Join Rosatom Nuclear Icebreaker Expedition to the North Pole

A student from SMA Taruna Nusantara in Malang, Galen Athaya Rinaldi Putra (16), will represent Indonesia in an expedition to the North Pole entitled ‘Icebreaker of Knowledge 2026’ aboard the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy. Approximately 100 students from 22 countries, including Indonesia, are participating in Rosatom’s ‘Icebreaker of Knowledge’ International Education Programme. The participants competed for the chance to join the unique scientific expedition to the North Pole on the 50 Let Pobedy, which is operated by Rosatom. Galen Athaya was declared the winner from Indonesia after completing three stages of the programme’s international selection process. Galen said the competition required a great deal of creativity, especially in making videos and completing tasks at each stage, which he found presented new challenges. ‘Each stage presented new challenges, so I had to continuously improve my ideas and skills,’ Galen said. Galen believes the expedition will be one of the most significant and unforgettable experiences of his life because it is a rare opportunity that not everyone gets to explore the North Pole. ‘I hope to discover more about the Arctic environment, its wildlife, and make new friends from all over the world,’ he said. The international expedition will bring together talented school students from around the globe and provide a unique opportunity to visit the North Pole, deepen understanding of the Arctic and modern nuclear technology, and witness the operation of the world’s only nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet operated by Rosatom. On board the nuclear icebreaker, participants will take part in an extensive educational and scientific programme featuring Russian and international experts. This is the second time Indonesia has participated in the Icebreaker of Knowledge programme. Last year, Indonesia was represented by Priya Agung Wicaksono. The programme includes presentations, workshops, scientific experiments, and interactive activities designed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. According to the goarctic.energy website, the ‘Icebreaker of Knowledge 2026’ expedition will be held from 1 August to 1 September, with the duration in the North Pole lasting 10 days.
