Indonesian Residents Suddenly Cutting Back on Overseas Trips, What's Going On?
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) records a decline in the number of Indonesian residents travelling abroad in February 2026. Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, stated that the number of national tourist trips (wisnas) during that period reached approximately 701,000 trips. “In February 2026, there were 701,000 wisnas trips, meaning Indonesians travelling abroad,” Ateng said during a press conference on Wednesday (1/4/2026). On a monthly basis, the figure dropped significantly by 30.34%. “That figure experienced a 30.34% decline on a month-to-month basis,” he explained. The decline also occurred annually. “Annually, wisnas also declined by 7.64%,” Ateng added. BPS also noted that cumulatively from January to February 2026, the number of wisnas trips reached 1.71 million. However, this number is lower compared to the same period the previous year. “Cumulatively, for wisnas from January to February 2026, it reached 1.71 million trips, or a 2.39% decline compared to the same period last year,” he concluded.
