Indonesian Researcher Stirs Social Media with 5 Million Citations

An account belonging to an Indonesian researcher on Google Scholar has caused a stir after the platform indicated his work had been cited more than 5.4 million times. The Google Scholar account in question is owned by Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad and is verified using an email address with a domain belonging to Universitas Terbuka in Pamulang. According to Google Scholar data, Yoesoep’s work has been cited 5,470,038 times, with the number of scientific papers he has registered on the platform reaching into the thousands. The account caught the attention of Misha Teplitskiy, a lecturer at the University of Michigan, who via his X account called Yoesoep the greatest scientist in the world based on Google Scholar citations. “Who is the greatest scientist of all time [by Google Scholar citation count]? Is it Einstein? Or Bengio or Hinton? No. The true servant of science is Mr. Rachmad from Indonesia. He has been extremely productive in publishing [scientific papers] after ChatGPT launched,” Teplitskiy said. Teplitskiy also posted an image of a list of researchers with the most Google Scholar citations on his X account, where Yoesoep’s name appeared in first place, cited more often than all articles registered under the name of the WHO. On ORCID, another website frequently used by researchers to publish their work, the account registered under Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad lists 2,511 articles. The most recent article registered on ORCID in 2025 is titled “Artificial Intelligence in Sovereign Wealth Funds: Danantara’s Competitive Edge in the Digital Era.” The citation count listed under Yoesoep’s name on Google Scholar has drawn the attention of netizens worldwide, with many expressing doubt over the data. “His greatest contribution is showing that the H-index is now meaningless. This is actually very valuable,” said Robert Palgrave, a researcher at University College London. “Some articles published in 2025 are cited in 2011? Does he have a time machine?” questioned the X account @ika_st.
