Programme focused on assisting economic recovery of residents in post-disaster Aceh Tamiang

Banda Aceh (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has distributed humanitarian assistance in the form of cash totalling 2.3 billion rupiah to 2,306 heads of household affected by the flooding disaster in Aceh Tamiang District.

“This programme is focused on assisting the economic recovery of residents in the post-disaster Aceh Tamiang region,” said Asmawi Syam, Head of the PMI’s Disaster Mitigation Division, in Aceh Tamiang on Friday.

The cash assistance programme received funding support from the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The 2.3 billion rupiah in cash assistance distributed to 2,306 households was allocated at 1 million rupiah per family. The distribution process was conducted through cooperation with the Indonesian Postal Service.

Asmawi stated that the flooding that occurred recently affected several sub-districts and villages and disrupted the community’s activities and livelihoods.

“This disaster not only caused damage to homes and the environment, but also had an impact on the economic life of the community,” he said.

He explained that since the onset of the disaster, PMI Central, together with the PMI Aceh Provincial office and PMI Aceh Tamiang, with support from partners of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, have continued to provide various humanitarian services in the affected areas.

The organisation hopes that this assistance will help the community meet daily needs, repair household requirements, and accelerate the post-disaster recovery process.

On behalf of the PMI, Asmawi expressed appreciation to the Aceh Tamiang District Government, PT Pos Indonesia, PMI volunteers, and all parties involved in distributing the assistance.

“PMI hopes this assistance can ease the burden on the community, whilst strengthening the spirit of mutual cooperation in our humanitarian mission,” said Asmawi Syam.
