Indonesian Port Opposite Singapore Undergoing Expansion, Set for Completion by End of 2026
Tanjung Uban Port in Bintan Regency, Kepulauan Riau, a strategic maritime gateway near Singapore, is currently undergoing a capacity expansion. State-owned ferry operator ASDP is adding new berthing facilities and strengthening port infrastructure to anticipate the continuously growing flow of passengers and vehicles.
One of the main works underway is the construction of Berth 2, spanning 119.48 metres. The new berth is designed to serve vessels with a capacity of up to 1,000 Gross Register Tonnage (GRT) and will be equipped with an 80-tonne movable bridge to speed up the loading and unloading of vehicles and passengers.
In addition to the new berth, the capacity of Berth 1 is also being enhanced. Through structural reinforcement and improved berthing facilities, the existing berth will be able to accommodate ships up to 2,000 GRT with a berthing length of 200.90 metres.
This move comes in response to high crossing activity at Tanjung Uban Port. In the first five months of 2026, the port served more than 301,000 passengers and around 131,000 vehicles. The growing traffic volume makes capacity expansion essential to ensure smooth operational flow and reduce potential queues during peak hours.
“We are ensuring that every stage of development proceeds well so that the benefits can be widely felt by the community and all stakeholders, while also driving economic growth and sustainable development in the Kepulauan Riau,” said ASDP President Director Heru Widodo in a statement on Friday (19/6/2026).
Currently, Tanjung Uban Port serves three crossing routes. One of the busiest is the Tanjung Uban-Telaga Punggur route, which connects Bintan Island with Batam. To serve this route, ASDP operates KMP Tanjung Burang and KMP Baru, which transport passengers and vehicles daily. This route is a vital artery for community mobility and goods distribution in the Kepulauan Riau.
ASDP Batam Branch General Manager Reno Yulianto stated that all ongoing works are targeted for completion this year to increase service capacity in the Kepulauan Riau region. “We are targeting all these works to be completed and operating optimally by the end of 2026. Through increased berth capacity and modernisation of supporting facilities, the goal is to support community mobility, supply chain fluidity, and regional economic activity,” said Reno.
