Indonesian Peacekeeper Killed in Lebanon, UN Strongly Condemns Attack
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned an explosion at a UNIFIL position in southern Lebanon that killed one Indonesian peacekeeper and injured others, urging all parties to guarantee the safety of UN personnel.
In his official statement, Guterres expressed firm condemnation of the incident, which he described as threatening the safety of UN peacekeeping forces.
“I strongly condemn the Sunday incident that killed an Indonesian peacekeeper from UNIFIL amid hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. Another Indonesian peacekeeper was seriously injured in the same incident,” he said, as quoted from the X platform on Monday (30/3).
He also extended condolences to the victim’s family and the Indonesian government, while hoping the injured peacekeeper recovers soon.
“My deepest condolences go to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen peacekeeper, as well as to Indonesia. I hope the injured peacekeeper recovers fully soon,” he added.
Guterres emphasised that this incident is part of a series of events that have increasingly endangered the safety of peacekeeping personnel in the conflict area.
“This is just one of several recent incidents that have endangered the safety and security of peacekeepers,” he stated.
Furthermore, he called on all parties involved in the conflict to comply with international law and ensure protection for UN personnel and assets.
“I call on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and assets at all times,” he concluded.
An Indonesian TNI soldier serving with the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed amid rising security escalations due to the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
