Jakarta – The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has urged the United Nations (UN) to take immediate action amidst escalating Middle East tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

This call was made by DPR Speaker Puan Maharani during her address at the Opening Plenary Session of the Indonesian Parliament’s Fourth Meeting Period for the 2025–2026 Parliamentary Year, held at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday.

“The DPR RI urges the UN to take action, to immediately work towards ensuring respect for international law, protection of civilians, and collective commitment to maintaining global peace and stability,” said Puan.

Additionally, the DPR RI has also emphasised that the Indonesian government must continue to pursue an independent and active foreign policy whilst safeguarding national interests in a wise, consistent, and constructive manner in response to evolving global geopolitical dynamics.

Puan stressed that the parliament supports all efforts and diplomatic initiatives to encourage all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation, whilst prioritising respect for national sovereignty and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

Amid rising global tensions, the DPR RI has also underscored the importance of de-escalation and conflict resolution through dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law and humanitarian protection.

To this end, Puan stated that the DPR RI will continue to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy through inter-parliamentary cooperation, including participation in regional parliamentary forums and by receiving delegations from friendly nations.

“The 2026 AIPA Caucus, which will be held in Indonesia, can serve as an opportunity to reinforce the role of Indonesian parliamentary diplomacy in promoting regional solidarity and maintaining regional stability,” she said.

The DPR RI, she added, will continue to play its part in strengthening Indonesia’s foreign policy framework to advance world peace and a more equitable global order for all, in accordance with the principles of independent and active foreign policy.

In her address, Puan noted that the world is witnessing geopolitical conflicts being resolved through military force. The tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran were described as reflecting international relations dynamics laden with strategic interests, regional security dominance, and global power competition.

According to her, this situation reaffirms the importance of strengthening international law, the role of international institutions in maintaining peace, justice, and global stability, and the right of nations to preserve their sovereignty.
