Indonesian Navy Trials Electric Bus: Initial Step Towards Green Mobility
JAKARTA - The Indonesian Navy is promoting the transformation to green mobility within Indonesia’s military institutions. Accordingly, the inaugural trial of an electric bus is now being conducted in the TNI AL environment at the Navy Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Wednesday (16/04/2026).
This is claimed to directly contribute to national energy resilience, reducing dependence on imported fuel oil, and achieving the Net Zero Emission target by 2060.
“Going forward, the use of electric vehicles will continue to be increased and expanded not only in Jakarta but also in other TNI AL Regional Commands across Indonesia. By utilising electric buses, electric cars, and hybrid vehicles, it is hoped to save fuel usage by around 50 percent and become part of the transformation towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly work system,” he said, quoted from an official statement on Friday (17/4/2026).
Ali also stated that the procurement of electric buses in the TNI AL environment aligns with the policy of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in his speech some time ago.
In that speech, the number one person in Indonesia said he would encourage a gradual transition to electric energy, with a target of saving fuel oil by up to 200,000 barrels per day or around 20 percent, as well as producing 100 gigawatts to reduce dependence on imported fuel oil.
The bus uses a 255 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate battery with a maximum speed of 100 km/h, having undergone a series of extreme tests including vibration, mechanical shock, water immersion, external fire, and overcurrent.
The bus is also equipped with safety features such as a Main Power Cut Off Switch, automatic APAR fire extinguisher in the battery/control room, smoke detection, GPS tracking, battery monitoring, and 12 CCTV cameras.
