Indonesian Navy Supports Legal Process Regarding Alleged Involvement of Its Members in Andrie Yunus Case

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has stated its full support for the legal process involving one of its members in the acid attack case against Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (Kontras).

“In principle, the Navy fully supports the ongoing legal process and will work professionally and transparently,” said the Head of the Navy Information Service (Kadispenal), Lieutenant Commander Tunggul, to Kompas.com on Thursday (19/3/2026).

He confirmed that a suspected perpetrator in the acid attack on Andrie Yunus is from the Navy branch and is currently serving in the TNI’s Denma Bais.

Tunggul stated that the Navy personnel in question is currently being processed and is under intensive investigation by the TNI’s Central Military Police (Puspom TNI).

Previously reported, Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of Kontras, became a victim of an acid attack by unknown individuals in the Senen area, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night (12/3/2026).

As a result of the attack, Andrie suffered burns to several parts of his body, including his eyes, face, chest, and hands.

“The four alleged perpetrators are from Denma Bais TNI,” said the Head of Puspom TNI, Major General TNI Yusri Nuryanto, during a press conference at TNI Headquarters, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

Yusri detailed that the four initials of the TNI personnel are Captain NDP, Lieutenant SL, Lieutenant BHW, and Sergeant ES.

“They are from the Navy and Air Force branches,” he said.

Nevertheless, Yusri has not yet announced the roles and motives behind the acid attack on the activist.

“So, we are still investigating the motive,” he emphasised.
