Indonesian Navy Prepares Bases for Aircraft Carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy (KSAL), Admiral TNI Muhammad Ali, stated that the TNI AL will prepare several bases to serve as docking locations for the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi.
“Personnel have already been prepared and will soon be sent to Italy. Then, the bases will possibly be prepared in several locations in Indonesia,” Ali said during a press conference at the Kolinlamil Jakarta Pier on Monday.
Ali explained that the construction of these bases is part of the TNI AL’s efforts to prepare infrastructure for the aircraft carrier.
However, Ali did not provide detailed information on the specific locations of the bases or the progress of the construction.
To date, the TNI AL is still awaiting coordination from the Ministry of Defence, which is directly handling matters with the Italian shipyard Fincantieri regarding the purchase of the aircraft carrier.
Ali hopes that Indonesia’s first aircraft carrier can dock in Indonesia before the TNI’s anniversary in October 2026.
It is known that this aircraft carrier shares similarities with two new KRI vessels owned by the TNI AL, namely KRI Brawijaya 320 and KRI Prabu Siliwangi 321, both built by the Italian company Fincantieri.
The 180.2-metre-long aircraft carrier is equipped with a super propulsion engine capable of propelling the ship at a speed of 30 knots or 56 kilometres per hour.
The fighter aircraft carrier is also fitted with several radar jamming systems and weapons such as the Oktupel Mk.29 launcher for Sea Sparrow/Selenia Aspide anti-aircraft missiles, twin Oto Melara 40L70 DARDO, triple 324 mm torpedo tubes, and Otomat Mk 2 SSM.
