Jakarta (ANTARA) — The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) educated senior high school (SMA) students about maritime knowledge by inviting them to sail aboard a warship of the Republic of Indonesia (KRI) on Thursday (9/7).

In a statement received in Jakarta on Friday, it was explained that the activity was organised by the Second Fleet Command (Koarmada II).

Chief of Staff of Koarmada II, Rear Admiral TNI Agam Endrasmoro, said the event was held so that the students would build a broad repertoire of maritime knowledge.

He went on to say that the younger generation is thus expected to develop an interest in the maritime world and become successors capable of preserving Indonesia’s seas.

In addition, Agam expressed hope that the activity would serve as an opportunity for the 300 participants from schools across East Java to get to know one another.

“Beyond gaining maritime insight, you can also build relationships or networks with peers from other schools. Make use of it to socialise, to get to know each other, and for positive activities,” said Agam.

During the activity, the students were taken by the TNI AL on a voyage around the Madura Strait aboard KRI Surabaya-591.

While on board, the participants were introduced to various parts of the ship and their functions.

After the voyage, all participants visited the KRI Nanggala-402 Monument to commemorate the nation’s fallen heroes.

“It is hoped that this series of activities will further foster a spirit of love for the homeland, a maritime soul, and motivation for the younger generation to contribute to safeguarding the glory of Indonesia’s maritime interests,” said Agam.
