Indonesian National Police Launch Digital Driving Licences Featuring Dynamic Barcodes
The Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) has announced a service innovation with the launch of digital driving licences (SIM). The National Police Headquarters claims that the launch of digital SIM is intended to facilitate driver mobility.
The launch was announced during the Technical Working Meeting (Rakernis) of the Indonesian National Police Traffic Function for the 2026 Fiscal Year on Friday (22/5). “This is a new innovation from the Head of Korlantas within the integrated Signal service system. There is service for SIM, as well as services for the extension of STNK and BPKB, which have been designed by the Head of Korlantas,” stated Deputy Chief of Police Commissioner General Pol Dedi Prasetyo during the event, as reported by Tribratanews.
Dedi explained that through this innovation, the public can access their driving licences via the Korlantas digital application without needing to carry physical cards at all times. He noted that the digital SIM will use a barcode that changes dynamically every 10 seconds to prevent counterfeiting; the system also prevents screenshots or unauthorised transfers. Dedi added that the digital SIM has received security certification from the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) to protect owner data.
Furthermore, Korlantas is innovating with the launch of electronic traffic law enforcement (ETLE) mobile drones. According to Dedi, this type of ETLE is more dynamic in capturing potential traffic violations across various road sections and can also perform facial recognition. “To avoid errors in traffic enforcement, it can also verify using facial sensing systems. This is an extraordinary step,” said Dedi, accompanied by the Head of Korlantas Polri, Inspector General Pol Agus Suryonugroho, and relevant stakeholders.
Director of Registration and Identification (Dirregident) of Korlantas Polri, Brigadier General Pol Wibowo, detailed the advantages of the newly launched digital SIM. He stated that the public can store and display their licences digitally through the Digital Korlantas Polri application. “The available data includes the owner’s identity, SIM number, and validity period, equipped with a QR code for verification by officers in the field,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday (23/5), as quoted by Antara.
He noted that with full implementation of the digital version, drivers undergoing traffic inspections will no longer need to present physical cards. Officers will only need to verify authenticity through the Korlantas centralised system via the driver’s mobile phone. “In the future, the validity of the SIM will rely on server data rather than solely on the physical card. This will increase efficiency, accelerate the inspection process, and minimise the potential for forgery,” he said.
Additionally, the digital system is integrated with various other services, such as online SIM extensions, validity notifications, and connectivity with the electronic traffic law enforcement (ETLE) system. However, during this initial stage, Wibowo advised drivers to continue carrying their physical SIM cards as the system is still undergoing refinement. “In the early stages, we still urge the public to carry their physical SIM as a backup while waiting for the full readiness of the system across all regions,” he said.
