Indonesian National Detained in Malaysia After Two Children Fall from 12th Floor Apartment

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have detained an Indonesian national, identified by the initials R (37), in connection with the tragic fall of two children from the 12th floor of an apartment in the Tampoi area of Johor Bahru. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in the death of one child. The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Johor Bahru confirmed it received official notification of the detention on Wednesday. Initial reports indicate both victims are the biological children of the Indonesian national and a Malaysian citizen. "The KJRI Johor Bahru has received information regarding the detention of Indonesian citizen R by the North Johor Bahru Police. We have submitted a request for consular access to ensure the individual’s legal rights are fulfilled," stated an official release from the KJRI. The incident was reported by local residents at 8:27 a.m. local time on 7 June 2026. Two children, a seven-year-old girl and a nine-year-old boy, fell from the 12th floor. The girl was reported to have died at the scene, while the boy sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving intensive care at Hospital Sultanah Aminah in Johor Bahru. Although both victims are the children of an Indonesian national, their citizenship status is Malaysian. Under Indonesian regulations, the children would be eligible for limited dual citizenship, but this status was never arranged by their parents. The PDRM is still investigating the motive behind the distressing event. The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which addresses the ill-treatment, neglect, abandonment, or exposure of children that may cause physical or emotional injury. The KJRI Johor Bahru emphasised it will continue to monitor the legal proceedings and provide full consular assistance to R, particularly as the individual’s mental health condition is a crucial factor in the investigation.
