Indonesian Military Clarifies Intent Behind Implementing Alert Level 1 in Response to Middle East Conflict
The Commander of the Indonesian Military (TNI), General Agus Subiyanto, has issued a directive telegram to his subordinates to implement Alert Level 1 in order to anticipate developments in the domestic situation resulting from the impact of the Middle East conflict. What is the purpose of Alert Level 1?
The TNI Public Information Office, Brigadier General Aulia Dwi Nasrullah, explained that the implementation of Alert Level 1 is a TNI responsibility that has been mandated by TNI law. He stated that the protection in question refers to defence against threats to the nation and state.
“One of the primary duties of the TNI is to protect the entire nation and all Indonesian territory from threats and disturbances to the integrity of the nation and state,” said Brigadier General Aulia when contacted on Sunday (8 March 2026).
Aulia stated that Alert Level 1 represents a form of TNI preparedness in facing the development of conflicts that occur. The conflicts in question, he said, are not limited to the national scope, but also international, such as those occurring in the Middle East.
“The TNI operates professionally and responsively, which is manifested by continually maintaining capabilities and strength so that it is always ready for operations, as well as maintaining alert status to anticipate developments in the international, regional, and national strategic environment,” he said.
For this reason, Aulia noted that Alert Level 1 is necessary so that the TNI is prepared to face threats. One of these, he continued, is routine readiness checks.
“Therefore, the TNI must maintain high operational readiness, one of which is by conducting routine readiness roll calls,” he stated.
