Indonesian Migrant Worker Injured in Malaysia Accident Repatriated

The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Johor Bahru has facilitated the repatriation of Saniah, an Indonesian Migrant Worker (PMI) from East Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), who was a victim of a traffic accident in Segamat, Johor, Malaysia. Saniah was involved in the accident on 14 June 2026 while riding a motorcycle. As a result of the incident, she sustained serious injuries, including a fracture to her right leg, requiring intensive care at Hospital Segamat. During her treatment, Saniah’s condition was continuously monitored until the medical team declared her health was gradually improving. After being assessed as fit for air and sea travel, KJRI Johor Bahru promptly processed her repatriation to Indonesia. Throughout the process, KJRI Johor Bahru provided consular assistance, including the issuance of a Travel Document in Lieu of Passport (SPLP), processing of Malaysian immigration documents such as the Check Out Memo (COM) and Special Pass (SP), and direct field assistance. Saniah’s repatriation was carried out via sea from Stulang Laut Port, Johor Bahru, to Batam Center Port, Batam. Upon arrival in Batam, Saniah was scheduled to continue her domestic journey to her hometown in East Lombok to reunite with her family. KJRI Johor Bahru ensured the repatriation process was conducted in a coordinated manner to guarantee safety, smoothness, and procedural compliance. Coordination was carried out with various parties, including the Directorate of Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, BP3MI Kepulauan Riau, P4MI Batam, the Batam Immigration Office, and the Port Health Office. Dhania Afini Lestari, Consular Functionary 3 at KJRI Johor Bahru, stated that Saniah’s case serves as an important reminder for Indonesian citizens intending to work abroad, particularly in Malaysia, to always pay attention to their immigration and employment status. She urged all prospective migrant workers to use official and procedural placement channels, emphasising that complete documentation and proper work status will greatly facilitate access to legal protection, standard health services, and swift handling should workers face legal, health, or emergency situations abroad. KJRI Johor Bahru reaffirmed its commitment to providing protection for Indonesian citizens in its jurisdiction, including through assistance, document facilitation, cross-agency coordination, and monitoring until their safe return to their home regions.
