Indonesian men's singles players exit from Futures

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's mens singles players failed in the
second round of the US$15,000 Indonesia F2 Futures at the
Kemayoran tennis center, Central Jakarta, on Thursday.

Febi Widhiyanto, a member of the country's Davis Cup team,
fought hard but had to bow out to Zbynek Mlynarik of Austria 6-4,
1-6, 6-2.

Mlynarik, who upset top seed Alsam Qureshi of Pakistan
Wednesday, will face Kwon Oh-hee of South Korea. Kwon defeated
Scott Barron of Ireland 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Old hand Dede Suhendar Dinata of Indonesia failed to overcome
Rick Devoest of South Africa to easily lose 1-6, 2-6. Devoest
will challenge third seed Frantisek Cermak of the Czech Republic.
Cermak eliminated qualifier Chung Seong-yoon of South Korea 6-2,
6-7 (5-7), 6-2.

National player Suwandi was defeated by Bjorn Jacob of Germany
6-7 (3-7), 4-6. Jacob will meet Yoon Yong-il of South Korea, who
crushed Marc Merry of the Netherlands 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

In another quarterfinals, Ashley Ford of Australia will face
Jarkko Nieminen of Finland on Friday. Ford beat Viktor Bruthans
of Slovakia 1-6, 7-5, 6-2, while Nieminen, who upset second seeds
Artam Derefasko of Russia on Wednesday, had an easy win 6-2, 6-2
over Dimitri Mazur of Uzbekistan.

In the doubles, the long-time partnership of Bonit Wiryawan
and Sulistyo Wibowo managed to reach the second round of the
tournament after beating compatriots Edy Kusdaryanto and Suwandi
5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

The Indonesians will challenge second seeds Rick Devoest and
Haydn Wakefield of South Africa, who eliminated national juniors
Ferdi Fauzi and Eko Kurniawan 6-1, 6-3.

Top seeds Mlynarik and Vladimir Platenik of Slovakia reached
the second round after beating William Barker and Richard Barker
of England 6-1, 7-5.

Third seeds Cermak and Roman Kukal of Slovakia overcame Minh
Le of the United States and Hiroyasu Sato of Japan 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.
They will meet Rico Jacober of Switzerland and Kantki Thomas of
the United States, who beat Indonesians Yusmawan Fahmi and
Ariawan 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (1-7), 6-4. (yan)
