Indonesian Medical Council Launches Investigation into Doctors Mocking BPJS Patient
The Indonesian Health Council (KKI) will conduct an investigation into an incident in which doctors and health workers posted unsympathetic comments about a BPJS Kesehatan patient on social media.
KKI Chairwoman Arianti Anaya said the council would coordinate with professional organisations to carry out the investigation. She said sanctions would be imposed if violations were found in the incident.
“KKI and professional organisations will coordinate to investigate this incident, and if violations are found, sanctions will be imposed in accordance with applicable regulations,” Arianti said when contacted on Thursday (6/8).
She expressed regret over the attitudes and comments of health workers on social media, which did not reflect the conduct expected of medical and health personnel.
“Every medical and health worker has an obligation to uphold professionalism, professional ethics, and maintain the dignity of the profession, including in the use of social media,” she said.
KKI also conveyed its deepest condolences over the death of the patient.
The incident began with a patient’s post on his Threads account, @yurizaltrich, on 22 July 2026. In the post, the patient said he had waited eight hours and had not yet been given a room for treatment. He declined to name the hospital where he sought care because he had registered through BPJS Kesehatan.
However, the patient’s post drew many negative comments. Many responded cynically or with a judgemental and belittling tone.
Based on information and findings gathered by internet users, some of the unsympathetic comments on @yurizaltrich’s post were made by accounts belonging to health workers or doctors.
One of the accounts was @erudarahaadini, belonging to Elda Putri Rahardini, who is said to be a doctor at Dr Sardjito General Hospital. She apologised and admitted that her comment was inappropriate.
The patient was later reported to have died. The @yurizaltrich post immediately drew widespread attention. Elda is known to be a specialist trainee doctor from the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing at Gadjah Mada University who is serving at Dr Sardjito General Hospital.
