Indonesian Maize Production Reaches 14.25 Million Tonnes, Slight Increase in 2026
The Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) estimates that the production of dry shelled maize with 14% moisture content (JPK KA 14%) between January and October 2026 will reach 14.25 million tonnes. This achievement represents an increase of 0.18 million tonnes, or 1.25%, compared to the same period in 2025, which reached 14.08 million tonnes.
This production increase is in line with an expansion in harvested areas. The total harvested area for shelled maize from January to October 2026 is estimated to reach 2.41 million hectares, an increase of 0.02 million hectares or 0.64% compared to 2.40 million hectares during the same period last year.
However, on a monthly basis, maize production in July 2026 actually experienced a decline. Production of JPK KA 14% in July is estimated to reach 1.38 million tonnes, a decrease of 6.33% compared to July 2025, which stood at 1.48 million tonnes.
Ateng Hartono, Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, explained that the production trends align with changes in the harvested area.
“In line with the harvest area overview, production of dry shelled maize with 14% moisture content for July 2026 is estimated to reach 1.38 million tonnes, lower than July 2025 which was 1.48 million tonnes,” Ateng stated during a BPS press conference on Tuesday (1/9/2026).
Regarding the harvested area, BPS noted that the area for shelled maize in July 2026 reached 0.23 million hectares, lower than July 2025 which reached 0.25 million hectares. This 6.06% reduction in harvested area is reflected in the decline in July’s maize production.
“The harvested area and maize production, based on KSA [Crop Area Estimation] observations for July 2026, show that the area reached 0.23 million hectares. This figure is lower compared to July 2025, which was 0.25 million hectares,” he said.
Despite the decline in production and harvested area in July, BPS anticipates a more positive outlook for the following period. The potential harvested area for shelled maize from August to October 2026 is estimated to reach 0.68 million hectares, an increase of 0.03 million hectares or 4.03% compared to the 0.65 million hectares recorded during the same period in 2025.
This increase in harvested area is expected to be followed by an increase in potential production. BPS estimates that JPK KA 14% production for August-October 2026 will reach 4.17 million tonnes, up 0.13 million tonnes or 3.22% compared to 4.04 million tonnes in the same period last year.
With the potential increase in harvested area and production during the August-October period, the total harvested area for January-October 2026 is projected to reach 2.41 million hectares, while production is expected to reach 14.25 million tonnes.
“Thus, the production of dry shelled maize with 14% moisture content from January to October 2026 is estimated to reach 14.25 million tonnes, an increase of 0.18 million tonnes or 1.25% compared to January to October 2025,” he explained.
BPS noted that these figures remain potential estimates, particularly for the August-October period. Changes in field conditions may affect the actual realisation of harvested areas and maize production.
Ateng added that the potential harvested area calculated by BPS also includes maize crops that will not entirely be harvested as shelled maize.
“This potential harvested area includes maize crops that will be harvested for purposes other than shelling, such as harvesting young maize or maize for livestock fodder,” Ateng clarified.
Furthermore, these potential figures are subject to change based on developing field conditions, including crop disturbances and changes in harvesting schedules.
“The potential figures can still change, depending on current field observations such as pest attacks or other disturbing organisms, as I mentioned previously,” he concluded.
