Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that Apple’s factory producing AirTags is already operational and has begun exporting.

“It’s already done. It’s already starting to export as well,” said Agus when met after the opening of the Apple Developer Institute at Autograph Tower, Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/4/2026).

When asked where the exports are going, Agus said the destination is the United States. “To America,” he said briefly.

At the beginning of last year, Apple chose to build an AirTag accessory factory in Indonesia, rather than products related to mobile phone, handheld computer, and tablet components (HKT).

However, the AirTag factory construction does not count towards the 40 per cent Domestic Component Level (TKDN) for HKT. Because AirTag is an accessory outside of direct iPhone components in this case.

At that time, Agus mentioned that Apple claimed they had never invested by building an HKT factory in any other country.

“They always say that they never invest by building HKT in other countries. They said that to us,” said Agus to the media at the beginning of last year.

Then the Minister of Industry said, it’s always the first time or there must be a first time. Meaning there is always a first for building an HKT factory in another country, and Indonesia could be the first.

“That’s what I tried to unpack. But in fact, they said with the Ministry of Investment to build AirTags which have nothing to do with HKT at all,” he explained.

Nevertheless, the Minister of Industry appreciates Apple’s investment in producing AirTags in Batam, Indonesia.

Apple’s AirTag production factory in Batam collaborates with a vendor named Luxshare ICT from China.

“They are still building that manufacturing, which we appreciate. And then the products from ICT that produce AirTags will be exported, generating foreign exchange, which we truly appreciate,” he concluded.
