Indonesian Internet Coverage Reaches 90%, Government Discusses New 5G Era
Internet connectivity coverage in Indonesia has reached 90%. The Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Angga Raka Prabowo, emphasised that the priority is not merely connectivity, but making it even better.
“We are not just talking about connectivity itself; we are talking about how the quality can be improved. This requires synergy between the government and the industry. Given how rapidly technology is advancing, this is the spirit we are fostering,” said Angga, following the 81st Postel Service Day ceremony in Bandung on Sunday (27/09/2026).
He noted that synergy between the government and industry is becoming increasingly evident. Angga cited the release of the 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz frequencies by the Ministry of Communication and Digital, which were auctioned some time ago.
For mobile operators, these two frequencies are considered vital for coverage areas in Indonesia. The 700 MHz band is intended to eliminate blank spots, while the 2.6 GHz band serves as a leap towards 5G network quality.
“The hope for the deployment of the 2.6 GHz band is that over the next three years, we will see the development of 5G technology in Indonesia becoming more rapid and better, particularly regarding the quality of public services and, of course, affordable pricing,” he said.
In his speech for the 81st Postel Service Day, Angga also highlighted that a nation’s strength is determined by its digital capabilities in an increasingly digital world, including ensuring that such progress benefits the people.
He stated that the question is no longer just about how far Indonesia has connected, but what changes occur once society is interconnected.
“Are children gaining better access to learning? Are MSMEs gaining wider markets? Is it becoming easier for the public to access public services? And is technology opening more opportunities to increase welfare? This is the direction of digital development that we must continue to push,” he explained.
Technological advancement is expected to make people’s lives easier, more productive, and safer. All these benefits are expected to be felt by the entire population across the country.
“To achieve this, we must build Indonesia’s digital transformation in its entirety. The digital transformation we build must ensure that society becomes more connected through equitable and high-quality connectivity, providing space to grow through economic opportunities and innovation,” he concluded.
