Indonesian intellectual property society officiated

JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta-based Indonesian Intellectual Property Society (IIPS) founded on Nov. 25 was officiated yesterday by Deputy Cabinet Secretary Bambang Kesowo.

Bambang swore in the association's executive board members, including Cita Citrawinda Priapantja as chairman; Chandra Darusman, Gunawan Suryomurcito, Insan Budi Maulana, Henry Soelistyo Budi as deputy chairmen; Arnel Affandi as executive secretary, and Erna Letty Kusoy as treasurer.

The executive board members are also founders of the society. The other founders are Dimas Wahab, Toeti Herati Noerhadi- Rooseno, Robinson Rusdi, Tedjo Baskoro, and Eramono Soekaryo.

Bambang, together with Toeti and Dimas, will become members of the society's advisory board.

The society hopes to promote Indonesians' social awareness and understanding of the importance of effective intellectual property rights protection and enforcement.

It's activities will cover seminars and discussions at both national and international levels concerning issues on intellectual property rights.

The organization also plans to publish books on intellectual property rights and establish networking relationships with government and non-governmental organizations at national, regional and international levels.

It also means to contribute to the making of laws and policies pertaining to property rights.

Membership will be open for those who have serious commitment and interest in the development of intellectual property rights in Indonesia.

Last month, the House of Representatives passed a law on the protection of intellectual property rights, which also aims at boosting technological development, trade and investment in Indonesia.

The House, after two months of deliberation, approved amendment of the 1987 law on copyright, the 1989 law on patents and the 1992 law on trademarks.

Amendments had been made so that the laws would match the requirements of the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, including Trade in Counterfeit Goods of the World Trade Organization, which Indonesia ratified in 1994. (aan)
