Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Habibie Center, a think tank based in the Republic of Indonesia, has emphasised the importance of upholding the principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter and resolutions of the UN General Assembly in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This statement was made by the Executive Director of The Habibie Center, Mohammad Hasan Ansori, when he spoke at a public discussion entitled “Consistency in Upholding the UN Charter”, which was held in Jakarta on Tuesday, to mark the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “As an institution that has long been involved in issues related to democracy and human rights, The Habibie Center views this crisis from the perspective of democracy and human rights, and promotes solutions based on these values,” said Hasan. Hasan explained that his institution’s position on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine remains the same as the joint statement previously published, namely the importance of upholding respect for the UN Charter, particularly with regard to the sovereignty of states, territorial integrity, and the rejection of the use of force in resolving disputes. The Habibie Center believes that Russia’s actions against Ukraine have threatened the geopolitical and economic stability of the region, and that the conflict specifically violates Articles 1 and 2 of the UN Charter, which deal with international peace and security, and the obligation of its members to adhere to the principles of the organisation. Hasan detailed that several principles have been violated by Russia, including: the principles of justice and international law, the principles of equal rights and self-determination, and the principle of respect for human rights. Russia is also said to have violated the principle of equal sovereignty among states, as well as the principle of refraining from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of other states. While adhering to the principles of the UN Charter in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Hasan also highlighted the importance of accountability, so that the UN Charter does not become merely a moral norm without real force. “Without consistent enforcement, the world will become a more dangerous place and conflicts will more easily occur. All parties agree that accountability is the main foundation of international security,” he said. According to him, the challenge of UN accountability depends on political will, especially from major countries; the dynamics of power in the international security system, particularly in the UN Security Council; and the selective application of accountability. To mark the fourth anniversary of the ongoing war between Moscow and Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pledged to do everything possible to achieve peace and justice in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that achieving lasting, just and sustainable peace is only possible by eliminating the root causes of the conflict, while emphasising that Moscow’s diplomatic efforts are aimed at this goal.
