The Indonesian government has affirmed its optimism in facing the Section 301 investigation conducted by the United States (US). The investigation is being carried out by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) as part of the review process of trade policies and practices of partner countries, including Indonesia. The probe covers two main issues. First, alleged practices that create or maintain excess capacity in the manufacturing sector (structural excess capacity). Second, the effectiveness of implementing bans on imports of goods produced with forced labour. “And we have data or information that supports this. In addition, this has already been part of the discussions during the ART negotiations that have been agreed upon together,” said Haryo Limanseto in Jakarta in his press release on Thursday (26/3/2026). Furthermore, Haryo conveyed that the government continues to strengthen its preparedness in facing the investigation process through cross-ministry and agency coordination as well as industry associations. These steps are taken to ensure alignment of data and information to be submitted in accordance with Indonesia’s position. These efforts are directed so that the explanations provided can appropriately and measurably address the issues of concern in the investigation. “Currently, the cross-ministry and agency team as well as industry associations have coordinated and will prepare responses both through public hearing sessions (before 15 April 2026) and government-to-government consultations with the USTR. The date for the consultation session is being agreed upon together,” said Haryo. The government is optimistic that, with strong data support, solid coordination across stakeholders, and constructive communication with the US side, Indonesia can navigate the investigation process well. Moreover, the government is also optimistic about continuing to safeguard national interests in the trade relations between the two countries.
