Indonesian Forestry Sector and Verra Strengthen Collaboration for Integrity-Driven Carbon Trading
The Indonesian government, alongside forestry industry players and the international carbon standard body Verra, is strengthening collaboration to accelerate the development of high-integrity, high-quality carbon trading within the forestry sector. This follows the issuance of the Minister of Forestry Regulation Number P.6 of 2026 regarding the Procedures for Carbon Trading through Greenhouse Gas Emission Offsets in the Forestry Sector. The strengthening of this cooperation emerged during a meeting between the Indonesian delegation and Verra on Friday (15/05/2026).
The Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo, stated that the issuance of Regulation P.6/202 Mitigating the impact of climate change through forestry-based emission offset schemes presents significant opportunities. “With the issuance of Regulation P.6/2026, Indonesia has a clearer foundation to accelerate carbon trading in the forestry sector. Verra’s future position will be highly strategic, as there is substantial interest from the Indonesian forestry business sector to utilise Verra’s methodology,” said Indroyono.
He explained that strengthening human resource capacity is a vital aspect in ensuring that Indonesian carbon projects can produce high-integrity and high-quality carbon credits. Indroyono added that Indonesia must also encourage stronger cooperation with Verra, particularly in technical capacity building and the strengthening of carbon verification systems, so that Indonesian forestry carbon projects can meet international standards while simultaneously increasing global market confidence.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Indonesian Forest Entrepreneurs Association (APHI), Soewarso, revealed that there are currently 16 carbon projects under APHI members categorised as ‘fast track’ that are eligible for carbon credit trading using the Verra scheme. “APHI hopes that Verra can accelerate the verification, validation, and issuance of carbon credits, while still adhering to the stages regulated in Regulation P.6/2026,” said Soewarso.
He noted that interest among APHI members in developing carbon projects based on the Verra scheme continues to rise alongside the growth of the voluntary carbon market in Indonesia. Consequently, APHI hopes to build closer cooperation with Verra, especially regarding human resource capacity building, methodology strengthening, and the development of high-integrity forestry carbon projects.
Sinclair Vincent, Senior Director of Sustainable Development, Program Development & Innovation at Verra, stated that Verra welcomes the issuance of Regulation P.6/2026, viewing it as a significant milestone in driving carbon project development, particularly under voluntary schemes in Indonesia. “Verra is open to developing cooperation with APHI in the field of human resource capacity building to produce high-integrity and high-quality carbon credits,” said Sinclair.
He added that Verra is currently committed to accelerating the verification, validation, and issuance of carbon credit certificates, while remaining in compliance with the provisions of Regulation P.6/2026. Furthermore, Verra continues to encourage its methodologies to gain recognition from the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) as part of the effort to strengthen the integrity of the global voluntary carbon market.
The meeting serves as part of the effort to strengthen Indonesia’s position as one of the countries with the largest forest carbon potential in the world, while expanding opportunities for green investment based on sustainable forest management. The collaboration between the government, forestry businesses, and international standard bodies is expected to accelerate the development of credible and transparent carbon projects that provide tangible benefits for forest protection, climate change mitigation, and the improvement of the welfare of communities living near forests.
