With the issuance of Ministerial Regulation P.6/2026, Indonesia now possesses a clearer foundation to accelerate carbon trading within the forestry sector. The Indonesian government, alongside forestry industry stakeholders and the international carbon standard institution Verra, is collaborating to expedite the development of high-integrity, high-quality carbon trading in the forestry sector.

The Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo, stated that the issuance of Ministerial Regulation P.6/2026 regarding the Procedures for Carbon Trading through Greenhouse Gas Emission Offsets in the Forestry Sector opens significant opportunities for accelerating carbon trading through emission offset schemes from Indonesia’s forestry sector. “With the issuance of Permen P.6/2026, Indonesia has a clearer foundation to accelerate forestry sector carbon trading,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday.

He further noted that Verra’s future position will be highly strategic, as there is substantial interest among Indonesia’s forestry business sector to utilise Verra’s methodology. Previously, on Friday (15/5), a meeting was held between the Indonesian delegation and the international institution Verra to strengthen Indonesia’s position as one of the countries with the largest forest carbon potential in the world, while simultaneously expanding green investment opportunities based on sustainable forest management.

Indroyono explained that strengthening human resource capacity is a vital aspect in ensuring that Indonesian carbon projects can produce high-integrity and high-quality carbon credits. The former Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs added that Indonesia also needs to encourage stronger cooperation with Verra, particularly in technical capacity building and strengthening carbon verification systems, so that Indonesian forestry carbon projects can meet international standards and increase global market confidence.

Meanwhile, the General Chairman of the Indonesian Forest Entrepreneurs Association (APHI), Soewarso, revealed that there are currently 16 carbon projects from APHI members categorised as ‘fast track’ that can trade carbon credits using the Verra scheme. “We hope that Verra can accelerate the verification, validation, and issuance of carbon credits while still adhering to the stages regulated in Permen P.6/2026,” he said. He noted that interest among APHI members in developing carbon projects based on the Verra scheme continues to rise alongside the growth of the voluntary carbon market in Indonesia. APHI hopes to tighten cooperation with Verra, especially in human resource capacity building, methodology strengthening, and the development of high-integrity forestry carbon projects.

Sinclair Vincent, Senior Director of Sustainable Development, Program Development & Innovation at Verra, welcomed the issuance of Permen P.6/2026, viewing it as a significant milestone in driving the development of carbon projects, particularly those based on voluntary schemes in Indonesia. “We are open to developing cooperation with APHI in the field of human resource capacity building to produce high-integrity and high-quality carbon credits,” he said. He added that Verra is currently committed to accelerating the verification, validation, and issuance of carbon credit certificates while adhering to the provisions of Permen P.6/2026. Furthermore, Verra continues to encourage Verra scheme methodologies to gain recognition from the ICVCM (Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market) as part of efforts to strengthen the integrity of the global voluntary carbon market.
