Indonesian Foreign Ministry: No Indonesian Citizens Reported as Victims of 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake in Southern Philippines

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu RI) has ensured that no Indonesian citizens (WNI) have been reported as victims in the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook Mindanao, southern Philippines, on Monday morning local time.

Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry, Heni Hamidah, stated that the Ministry, alongside the Indonesian Consulate General in Davao, Philippines, is continuously monitoring the developments of the earthquake and the condition of Indonesian citizens in the affected areas.

“So far, there has been no information regarding any Indonesian citizens or migrant workers being affected by this earthquake,” Henidu stated in response to inquiries in Jakarta.

Given that the earthquake was also felt in eastern Malaysia, the Director noted that the Indonesian representative in Sabah is also monitoring the earthquake’s progress and its impact. This monitoring in Malaysia aligns with the advisories issued by the Sabah state government following the earthquake in the Philippines.

“All Indonesian citizens and migrant workers are urged to continue monitoring further developments in the situation,” Heni added.

Indonesian representatives available for contact if required include the Indonesian Consulate General in Davao (+63-966-2455-472) for citizens in the Philippines, as well as the Indonesian Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu (+60-146-060-067) and the Indonesian Consulate in Tawau (+60-198-228-800) for citizens in Malaysia.

The large earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.7 and detected at a depth of 50 km, occurred in Mindanao, Philippines, on Monday morning at approximately 07:37 local time. The epicentre was located at coordinates 5.80° N; 125.14° E, approximately 58 kilometres from General Santos City in the Philippines, and about 244 kilometres northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Tremors were felt in several areas of Sabah, Malaysia, such as Tawau and Semporna, as well as in Indonesia, including the provinces of North Maluku, North Sulawesi, and Gorontalo. Tsunami warnings were subsequently issued by the governments of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan.
