Indonesian Foreign Ministry Ensures Continued Assistance for Migrant Worker AJ in Libya

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that assistance for an Indonesian migrant worker with the initials AJ, currently in Benghazi, Libya, is ongoing. The government is paying special attention to the case because AJ departed through non-procedural channels and is now requesting help to return home.

The Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, explained that AJ is still considering a final decision regarding her future in Libya. There are two options available: completing the work contract or terminating it early with certain consequences.

"If AJ still wants to continue her two-year contract, she will return home normally. But if she decides to break the contract midway, she must pay several other obligations," Heni said during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Heni added that AJ’s non-procedural departure status means handling this case requires more intensive coordination. To date, AJ is reported to still be weighing whether to stay and complete the contract or choose to return to Indonesia sooner by fulfilling the applicable administrative obligations.

In response to the situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Tripoli continue to take protective measures. The government is also coordinating with relevant parties in Libya to ensure AJ’s rights are fulfilled and the case is resolved according to the legal procedures in that country.

The government is urging the public to always use official channels when seeking employment abroad to avoid the risk of exploitation and to facilitate the protection process if problems arise in the destination country.
