Indonesian Foreign Minister Pays Final Respects to Ali Khamenei

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono paid his final respects to the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at his final resting place in Mashhad, Iran, on Friday (10/7). “Indonesia will remember His Excellency (Ali Khamenei) as a respected Islamic scholar and an important figure in the enduring friendship between Indonesia and Iran,” Sugiono said on the official X account of the Indonesian Foreign Minister, monitored online from Jakarta on Saturday. He also stated that the enduring friendship between Indonesia and Iran will continue to be built on mutual respect and mutual support during times of mourning. Meanwhile, Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani said on his Instagram account that the Indonesian delegation attending the funeral ceremony was welcomed by the Custodian of the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza, Ayatollah Ahmad Marvi. According to him, Khamenei’s tomb is located near the tomb of Imam Reza, who is the eighth imam for Shia Muslims in Iran. He noted that the Iranian people consider the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza complex in Mashhad as one of the holy sites frequently visited by pilgrims from various countries. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang stated on Thursday (9/7) that the visit was made in response to an invitation from the Iranian Government to pay respects to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the late Supreme Leader of Iran. Yvonne added that the Indonesian delegation would also meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. The bilateral meeting between Sugiono and Araghchi aims to further strengthen Indonesia-Iran bilateral relations, deepen cooperation in various priority areas, and accelerate coordination between the two countries in facing various regional and global challenges, Yvonne said. Meanwhile, the meeting between Muzani and Ghalibaf aims to strengthen inter-parliamentary partnerships and cooperation between the peoples of both countries.
