Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the Palestine issue is a test for the UN, including the Security Council. He made this statement while participating in an open debate of the UN Security Council in New York, United States. Sugiono noted that the Security Council debate, led by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, was themed ‘Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centred International System’. According to Sugiono, the core of the debate was to evaluate efforts to strengthen the UN and reform the multilateral system. ‘In simpler terms, we must adjust the relevance of the UN to current global circumstances, as it was established in the post-World War II era,’ Sugiono said in a statement released by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. Sugiono highlighted that eight decades after the UN’s establishment, the world has undergone significant changes, including unresolved conflicts and potential flashpoints. ‘Indonesia reiterates that Palestine is a test for the UN, a test of the trust placed in it,’ he said. He stated that the world has witnessed the struggles, including violence and suffering endured by the Palestinian people. ‘We stress once again that Palestinian independence based on a two-state solution is absolutely essential, and for this, the role of the UN and the Security Council is instrumental in achieving this goal,’ he added.
