Indonesian Foreign Minister at UN Security Council: Palestinian Independence Must Be Achieved
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stressed that Palestinian independence through a two-state solution is an absolute necessity.
He made the statement during a high-level open session of the UN Security Council on the theme ‘Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centred International System’ at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
‘We reiterate that Palestinian independence based on a two-state solution is an absolute necessity,’ Sugiono said in a video statement on Wednesday, 27 May 2026.
The Foreign Minister stressed the crucial role of the UN and its Security Council in resolving the conflict.
Indonesia also emphasised the importance of respecting international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and called for seas not to be used as arenas for conflict or political pressure between nations.
As an archipelagic nation, Sugiono said Indonesia has a vested interest in maintaining the stability and security of international sea lanes. The country also highlighted the need to protect UN peacekeeping forces.
‘Therefore, we reiterate the importance of protecting UN peacekeepers, which is not optional but a duty,’ he said. ‘This is also the core of what the UN, particularly the Security Council, must do,’ he added.
